With the emerging middle class turning their back on the past, hunting, which, though considered a secular pastime, lost its shine as it was too closely associated with the feudal culture of the past. Colonial forest laws ensured that it would, at best, remain the exclusive privilege of a few native and foreign elites.17 Of what was once a favourite sport, one native writer lamented:

with the development of the modern idea of property in land, the forests ceased to be regarded as ‘terra naturalis’ and began to be gradually enclosed; the financier stretched his greedy hands amidst these untouched spots and reserved them for public purposes; the servants of the sirkar enforced the game laws and protected the monopolies. All these added to the spread of ever-increasing population opening up new habitations and pastures, has cooled the very embers of the enthusiasm in such exciting and active games.18
